A community is in shock after a man in his 40s tragically died after being hit by a car last night in Westhoughton.

Residents living on the estate said they heard a loud noise with many running out to help - with one saying her son called the emergency services after hearing a crash.

Police say they believe a blue Jaguar XE, driven by a man in his 20s, attempted an 'overtaking manoeuvre' on Chew Moor Lane, Westhoughton, when it hit the victim.

The road was shut into the early hours as a police investigation into the crash started.

Officers have also put out an appeal for information as a man has been arrested.
