Spice Island Tonge Moor nominated for The Bolton News Best Curry House

Spice Island on Tonge Moor Road is one of the 10 finalists.

The people of Bolton took to the polls to nominate their favourite place for a curry in the borough earlier this month, with the 10 best being put through to the final. 

The Tonge Moor takeaway has built up a loyal customer base over the 29 years it has been in town, being particularly revered for the Bangladeshi curries it serves up. 

Manager Joynal Uddin and head chef Mehbub Hussain have run the business together since it was established.

"Seeing as we have been here almost 30 years, up to four generations have been coming regularly. We have seen parents with their little children come when we first opened, then they grow up and bring their children. 

One of the dishes (Image: Joynal Uddin) "And with us, we have up to three generations working here as well, it is a family-run restaurant, we are all related, so our customers' children have been growing up with our children, it brings us closer to them as well." 

Spice Island won the best in the North West at the English Curry Awards in 2019, as well as having been nominated multiple times for the Asian Curry Awards and for the Food Awards England. 

Joynal added: "We have got a Bangladeshi section on our menu, these are the recipes based on what people back home in Bangladesh, our mothers and grandmothers, would cook. 

"All our Bangladeshi dishes have been passed down the generations. 

"What also makes it different is the sauces and mixes our chef uses are based more on what we would eat at home as opposed to Westernised flavours."
