A Bolton support group for those affected by cancer is celebrating its one-year anniversary.

The monthly meet-up, called Bolton 5K Your Way, takes place at Leverhulme Park on the last Saturday of each month at 8.45am.

The group encourages people to exercise and socialise, with attendees able to walk, run, or simply enjoy a chat over a drink in a café.

The gathering is part of the nationwide "Move Against Cancer" scheme, which launched the 5K Your Way movement in 2018.

This scheme now boasts nearly 90 groups across the UK and Ireland.

The aim is to motivate those living with cancer or who have survived it, along with their families, friends, those who have lost a loved one to cancer, and people working in cancer services, to walk, jog, run, cheer, or volunteer.

The group ensures that attendees can participate as much or as little as they want and most choose to walk the route.

Every group is led by at least one volunteer 5K Your Way Ambassador, who makes sure "everyone receives a warm welcome".

The Bolton group has witnessed more than 50 attendances since its relaunch.

Ken Warner, a founding member of the Bolton group, said: "It is now two years since I heard the three little words no-one wants to hear: 'It is cancer', when I was diagnosed with throat cancer.

"I was eager to become involved with 5K Your Way as I think that for people affected by cancer whether before, during or after treatment, it is important to get any bit of exercise you can manage and get out in the fresh air.

"But just as importantly for those affected and their family and friends, is to socialise with people who know what they are going through.

"Cancer isn’t the main topic of conversation, but there is a shared understanding.

"Even if you can’t complete the full 5K, just do what you can, as just taking part is what matters most."

The group is not only about physical fitness but also about benefitting emotional and psychological well-being through physical activity.

One of the first visitors, Sue, commented on the group's Facebook page: "Joined today for the first time and really enjoyed it.

"Sun was shining and the first frost on the ground.

"I only managed one lap, which was 2.1 mile, as I’m hooked up to my chemotherapy pump but super proud.

"I made it that far with so much caring encouragement from the team.

"All abilities welcome so do not be put off.

"Fresh air, great company and exercise is fabulous for our mental health too.

"Can’t wait till the next one."

Kelly Gordon, Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service manager and 5K Your Way ambassador, added: "5K Your Way is a wonderful group for anyone affected by cancer and the physical and mental health benefits are undeniable.

"We’ve seen so many friendships blossom and it’s making a difference to so many lives in our community.

"We’d love as many people as possible living with or beyond cancer, their families, friends and those working in cancer services to join us celebrate our first birthday."

The group will meet in the park at 8.45am for the anniversary celebrations, which will include a few birthday surprises.

Following each 5K, attendees often head to the Bridge Café on Bradford Street, Haulgh, for a chat over a cup of tea.
