At the time it was described by the Bolton Evening News as “one of the Croal Valley’s worst industrial scenes”.
This photo from March 1971 shows part of the 33-acre site of the former Hall Lane Chemical Works.
At the time Bolton Council was cutting back spending on land reclamation schemes but Bolton’s planning committee was urging for a joint approach with Lancashire County Council to get something done about the eyesore site.
In case you are wondering about the line down the middle of the picture, the photographer at the time took two photos and overlapped them to show more of the site
