A BMW driver is calling for the council to compensate him and other drivers for the damage done by an island in the centre of Chorley Old Road.
Aidan Price, from The Haulgh, drove over the inconspicuous island close to the crossroads with Devonshire Road in Heaton after 8pm on Saturday (October 12).
Mr Price, 54, stopped at the side of the road to see he had damage to an alloy wheel and, in the minutes after he stopped at the side of the road, he and his wife saw a number of other drivers do the same thing as he had done close to Best One Convenience Store and Greenhalgh's.
Mr Price is asking the council for compensation to him and to other drivers for the damage done to his BMW X1 and to the other vehicles because there were no bollards in the area at the time.
He said: "It could've been avoided if there were bollards and it is irresponsible not to do anything about it. My wife went into the shop and the shopkeeper said it was the same the day before.
"The cost in my case is hundreds of pounds for the damage to the alloy wheel. Luckily there is no damage to the steering and there is no damage to the suspension but it could've been avoided."
Bolton Council spokesperson said there were bollards then temporary bollards but these were removed by someone other than the authority.
AThey told The Bolton News the island in the centre of Chorley Old Road was repaired within a matter of days of the incident involving Mr Price.
A Bolton Council spokesperson said: "Following damage from a vehicle the island was made safe with temporary bollards.
"Unfortunately, at some point, these were removed.
"The island has now been fully repaired as of October 15.
"Anybody who believes they have a claim against the council can find details of how to make a claim on the council website."
The council website says there is no compensation unless it is clear there is "legal liability".
