Firefighters from Bolton are set to take on the gruelling staircase of an iconic Manchester skyscraper to raise funds for The Christie Charity.

The fundraiser, which is taking place on Sunday, October 20, is led by Green Watch Bolton Central firefighter, Ryan Bailey, who has 16 years of service.

Ryan will be joined by his colleagues, Mark Bottomley, from Warrington, Nick Rayner, from Bolton, and Craig Travis, from Middleton.

The Christie Charity is the largest provider of radiotherapy in the NHS and is home to the largest chemotherapy unit in the UK; and is a specialist surgical centre concentrating on rare cancers and complex procedures.

The thigh-burning dash to the top takes in an incredible 798 steps and 171 meters.

Despite the gruelling challenge, the team are trained for high-rise fires and see this as a unique opportunity to challenge themselves while supporting a worthy cause.

Ryan said: "It seemed something a little out of the ordinary but also something we could do as a team, plus where else in Manchester can you do an event like this and be sheltered from the rain?

“We train for high rise fires etc but don't get the opportunity to climb quite as many stairs.

"We're going to see how we go this year and maybe push to wearing full uniform next year.

“But, of course, it's all for a great cause which is the main thing."

After discovering The Christie Charity fundraising event via social media, they immediately got involved, creating a JustGiving page.

Kevin Harmer, mass participation officer at The Christie Charity, said: “We’re thrilled to see such strong support from the Bolton fire crew.

“Their dedication to fundraising for The Christie Charity is truly inspiring, and we can’t wait to cheer them on as they take on this incredible challenge.”
