A ‘new building on stilts’ was how the Bolton Evening News described Bolton Central Labour Club’s new premises, pictured here the day after the official opening in the summer of 1975.
The new club on St George’s Road had cost £96,000 and had been built next door to the old club.
The committee had spent a year fundraising to cover the costs which had involved four nights of entertainment every week being put on at the old club. Building work did not stop the fundraising with shows continuing throughout.
For the official opening, 400 members enjoyed a free buffet and were given the opportunity to look around the new, purpose-built premises.
The club closed in 2000 and would later become home to the Salvation Army.
