The mayor of Bolton has confirmed he and the mayoress are safe following their trip to Florida amid the devastating impact that Hurricane Milton is causing.

Cllr Andy Morgan and his partner Karen Holdsworth were forced to leave Sanibel Island, just off the coast of Ford Myers, following a mandatory evacuation order and moved to Naples to stay with friends.

At least 16 people have died after Hurricane Milton passed through Florida this week, though the total number of deaths could rise as rescue workers make their way through flood water and debris.

The Category 3 storm made landfall on Wednesday evening near Siesta Key, Florida spawning dozens of tornadoes, 28ft waves, strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Officials have warned that more flooding is likely amid the coming days.

More than two million homes and businesses are without power and thousands of people have been rescued from flooded areas.

On social media, Cllr Morgan said: “We are all safe and luckily the storm didn’t come as predicted, where we are anyway.

“We prepared, as everyone did, for the arrival of Hurricane Milton but he didn’t show up with the force that we were told he would.

“What I saw and witnessed was the efficiency of devolved government and the true strength of community.

“Everyone played a crucial role in making sure that they were ready for the worst, and it was commendable.

“Even though the storm did not hit as expected the community’s readiness was an example of how resilient and ready we can be when we work together.

“Our beloved Sanibel took a hit but not to the extent that was expected, luckily, and they will of course rebuild stronger and prepare for the next challenge as all good communities do.

“Our thoughts are of course now with those that weren’t so lucky.”
