A Bolton councillor, licensing officer and police officer are among the opponents to a late-night licence for a bar and restaurant.

The applicant, Amouye Bessoule, applied for a late-night licence for Gee's Bar and Restaurant on Derby Street over the summer.

The application is to be allowed to open until 3am every day of the week and to offer alcohol up until half an hour before closing. At the moment the bar and restaurant which was once The Derby Arms and Surya Restaurant is allowed to open until 11.30pm every day of the week and to offer alcohol up until half an hour before closing.

Ayyub Patel, a councillor for the area, is among the opponents as is Bolton Council's Garry Lee and GMP's PC Ben Brookfield.

Cllr Patel said he and his colleagues, Abdul Atcha and Sajid Ali, were anxious about anti-social behaviour and criminal behaviour in the area.

Mr Lee and PC Brookfield said it would be a challenge to address these issues in an area which is on the edge of the town centre.

Mr Lee said: "My concern is there is a distinct difference between running licensed premises until 11.30pm and running licensing premises until 3am and with the limited experience of the applicant and his Designated Premises Supervisor I am not satisfied they would be able to address any issues."

PC Brookfield said: "Greater Manchester Police have concerns about the premises opening until 3am and its impact on the area, resources and residents. The premises is outside the night-time operation and the town centre and it would be unusual for a premises to open this late in such a locality."

Gee's Bar and Restaurant is on Derby Street where other businesses are a KFC, which is open into the early hours at the weekend, and a McDonald's, which is open 24 hours a day.

The application is up for consideration by a Licensing Committee on Friday after the adjournment of a previous Licensing Committee due to the non-attendance of one of the councillors.
