The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) has issued advice on how to avoid harming hedgehogs this November.
Ahead of bonfire and firework season, they are asking people to "stop, move, and check" to ensure wildlife safety.
Fay Vass, chief executive of BHPS, said: "As the nation gears up for bonfire and firework season, we are asking people to #RememberHedgehogs and consider how our actions can harm the wildlife living in our gardens and neighbourhoods.
"A bonfire pile looks like the perfect readymade home to a hedgehog seeking a safe and cosy winter nest to hibernate in.
"They don’t know we plan to set light to it."
The BHPS's "stop, move, and check" campaign asks the public to consider alternative ways to celebrate, build bonfires on the day to dissuade wildlife from nesting, and check piles thoroughly before lighting.
Ms Vass said: "It’s vital to remember hedgehogs at this time of year and to give them the best possible chance to escape the danger of a lit bonfire that they’ve mistaken for a safe haven."
If a hedgehog is found in an unlit bonfire heap, BHPS recommends carefully placing it in a high-sided box with nesting materials, and leaving it in a safe, quiet place with food and water.
Once the fire is completely out, the hedgehog should be released near where it was found with its nest materials, food, and water.
The charity also encourages followers to engage with them on their social media platforms for more tips and guidance.
