A man who lost his father to Alzheimer’s is doing an entire year of fundraising across the UK to raise money to fund research into the devastating disease.
Steven Wright is raising money for Alzheimer’s Society by running the London Marathon in April 2025. In the build up to this, he is doing a year of activities to raise as much money as possible and will be joined by his family and friends.
Currently Steven has raised £1,947 of his £2,000 goal.
In April this year Steven completed the first activity, the Manchester Marathon, which spans over 26 miles across the region as the UK’s second largest marathon.
The event saw a record-breaking 32,000 people sign up to take on the challenge after final entries sold out months before.
Just one month later, Steven successfully completed the Greater Manchester 10k run with his friend, Caroline.
Steven is now embarking on the third leg of his journey, in which he will complete four bike rides across the UK, with each ride ending up back in Bolton.
Steven said: “I sadly lost my dad in March 2023 following many years of suffering at the hands of Alzheimer's Disease.
“This is such a cruel condition which has a devastating impact on the person but also a significant impact on their family and friends.
“If you could spare any money to support this important cause at any time before April 2025 it would be amazing but joining in would be just as great.
“It is time to end the suffering that this condition causes.”
As a long time, Bolton Wanderers season ticket holder, the challenges include a series of cycling days around the North West. He completed the first ride in May from Bolton Wanderers Stadium to Salford City, Manchester City, Stockport County to Manchester United and eventually back to the Bolton Wanderers stadium.
The total journey amounted to just under sixty miles.
The second ride, which spanned over the course of two days at the beginning of August, started at Barrow to Morecambe, then Fleetwood, Blackpool before returning to the Bolton Wanderers stadium.
He is currently preparing for the last two rides, which will be through Accrington Stanley to Blackburn Rovers and Tranmere Rovers, Liverpool Stadium, Everton and Wigan Athletic.
Other challenges include the Yorkshire Three Peaks, Peak District Peaks Walk, walking the Wakefield Way route (where he currently lives), walking from Darwen Tower to Rivington Pike and other challenges still to be added.
Steven said “My dad was a wonderful man with a great sense of humour and is sadly missed by all his family and friends.
“Many people will remember him as their friendly local bank manager at various Barclays Banks across the north-west.
“He also volunteered as a treasurer for different organisations and was an incredibly proud family man.
“We need to try and stop anyone else from having to go through the horrible situation my Dad and our family experienced.
“I want to raise as much money as I can for a very worthy cause so any donations would be very welcome.”
