Police continued their crackdown on speeding – this time targeting roads in Westhoughton.

Officers conducted roadside speed checks yesterday (September 29) after residents raised concerns about speeding traffic on certain roads.

Five drivers were stopped for speeding.

The checks were a part of Operation Classify, which was launched in Bolton earlier this year.

A spokesman for GMP Bolton  said: “Officers from our Westhoughton Neighbourhood Team were out and about conducting speed checks  on Sunday (29 September).

“After feedback from residents via 'Bee in the Loop' we have spent time on Chew Moor Lane, Wigan Road, Chorley Road, New Tempest Road and Southfield Drive.

“A total of five traffic offence reports were issued for excess speed.”

Operation Classify was launched to reduce death and serious injury on Bolton’s roads.

It was set up by officers from Bolton’s Prevention Hub which targets particular high-risk road routes in the area which has seen significant collisions over the past two years.

The aim of Operation Classify is to reduce death and serious injury on the roads of Bolton, which saw 71 serious collisions in 2022, nine of them sadly being fatalities. This trend continued into 2023.

Excessive speeding alongside drink and drug driving and driver standards have been the main key causes of road traffic collisions in the area.
