Bolton Council could bin its ban on hypnotism after another hypnotist was allowed permission for a performance.

Colin Adamson was allowed permission for the performance at The Northern Way, Nelson Square, next month.

According to the Hypnotism Act, any act in which someone's "susceptibility to suggestion" is increased or intended to be increased is in need of approval from the authorities but the Bolton Council area is understood to be unusual in that it is one of a few areas where the approval from the authorities is not automatic.

It had a 40-year ban on hypnotism until another hypnotist was at The Albert Halls, Victoria Square, on February 10.

Sean Fielding, a councillor on the licensing committee, stated his support for a review of licensing policy when the first application was up for consideration by the committee.

Cllr Fielding re-stated his support for the review of licensing policy when Mr Adamson's application was up for consideration by the committee in council chamber this week.

Cllr Fielding said: "We had an application a while ago where we were one of a few authorities to have a ban in place.

"Is there a ban in place and is that why this [application] is before us or would this [application] be before us anyway?"

Patricia Clyne, the licensing manager, said: "We want to reword the licensing policy and it will be out to a consultation.

"Depending on the outcome of the consultation we will reword the licensing policy so they won't come before you unless you want them to come before you."

Mr Adamson, from Darwen, Lancashire, has had thousands of performances where he has hypnotised tens of thousands of people according to his website.

The performance is at The Northern Way on Nelson Square on October 12.
