It is thought around £500 of fuel was taken from the Sainsbury's supermarket petrol station next to Heaton Park while around £1,000 of fuel was taken from other petrol stations in the region.
Police said the incidents at the Sainsbury's supermarket petrol station were over the course of two weeks last month and the incidents involved a BMW displaying different front plates and rear plates.
They are trying to track down an individual in an image which was taken from CCTV.
