A rope and twine manufacturer, operating since 1856, won Family Business of the Year.

Based at Orient Works on Morris Green Business Park, James Lever Rope and Twine Manufacturers have been passing the trade down for generations.

It is one of the UK’s oldest rope manufacturers with more than 155 years of experience.

A significant milestone was reached in 1953 when James Lever introduced the PVC clothesline to the UK market, showcasing their ability to innovate and meet emerging consumer demands

Chairman, James Lever, said: "I'm shocked, it's an honour to even be considered, I’m really surprised, gobsmacked you could even say.

"This goes to our thousands of employees over many years."

The firm began its journey by transforming cotton bindings collected from mills into sturdy ropes.

They were then sold back to the mills as transmission ropes.

Currently managed by the sixth generation of the Lever family, the business remains firmly rooted in Bolton.

They were joined by Christine Stones Budget Blinds, Sankey Heating and Plumbing Supplies, Howarth’s Funeral Services and Grubs Boots on the nominees' list.

The category was sponsored by North West Design Studios.

James Lever Rope and Twine recently partnered with Clique Energy, a fellow Bolton-based company, to integrate cutting-edge battery storage technology.

This collaboration not only reduces operational costs and emissions but also underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability and forward-thinking practices.
