A street in Bolton has been blighted by fly-tipping for more than a year despite repeated complaints, residents say.

People living on Longfield Road in Daubhill say that the area has frequently been strewn with rubbish and abandoned furniture.

This has sparked alarm, particularly among parents of young children and teenagers.

A father-of-two said: “It’s been like this for over a year now, it’s getting really bad.

“I’ve rung the council and I’m a taxpayer, so I’d like the backstreets to be clean.”

He said that he and several of his neighbours on Longfield Road had been especially concerned about the effects on their children as they go to and from school.

He said: “Every day when they go to school, it's just not nice for them or for any of us.”

He added: “The neighbours have kids as well and they have the same problem.

“It’s horrible, it's going all the way down to the shops nearby.”

Images from around Longfield Road show all kinds of rubbish, from cans and cardboard boxes to planks of wood and abandoned furniture.

The father-of-two said: “I just that I pay my council tax and I should be able to enjoy my time at home.

“I can smell it from my garden so I can’t even stand there because of the smell and it’s the same for the neighbours as well.”

This comes amid long-running concerns about fly-tipping and other environmental issues like littering across the borough in recent times.

Earlier this month, the council launched fly-tipping clean up operations across Anglia Grove, Cambria Street, Caledonia Street, Broomfield Street and Willows Lane in Deane and Daubhill.

In response to the neighbour’s complaints, the council has said that it is aware of the issue on Longfield Road and will take action.

The authority also says that it has brought in measures to crack down on fly-tipping more broadly elsewhere around the borough.

A council spokesperson said: “Fly-tipping is harmful to the environment, causing significant and unsightly hazards which are expensive to clean up.

“As a council, we are taking a stronger approach to deter this by prosecuting all cases and fining those responsible whenever possible.

“We have recently strengthened our enforcement action including a substantial increase in fines and the seizure of vehicles.”
