Several takeaways in Bolton have received low food hygiene ratings this summer.

Following inspections throughout July and August, at least four takeaways in Bolton have been issued hygiene ratings of the lowest possible scores given to establishments – either zero or one star by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

When an establishment is awarded a hygiene rating of one, it means major improvement is necessary.

Being awarded a zero means urgent improvement is necessary for the establishment to maintain safe food hygiene standards.

Bolton takeaways rated one star in July/August

Original Chaat

Original Chaat, located at 351 Wigan Road in Bolton, received a rating of one after an inspection on August 6.

The detailed scores for Original Chaat reveal that the hygienic handling of food was generally satisfactory which includes aspects such as food preparation, cooking, reheating, cooling and storage.

However, the cleanliness and condition of the facilities were in need of major improvement.

This category encompasses factors such as appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control.

A spokesperson for Original Chaat said: “There were issues with cleanliness on some of the appliances at the establishment and these have since been dealt with.

“I asked the FSA for their advice on how I could improve my restaurant and made sure to follow this closely and comply.

“I am now awaiting a second inspection and am sure that next time I will get rated four or five for the establishment.”

Chknstop

Chknstop received a hygiene rating of one after it was inspected by the FSA on 15th July 2024.

Both the handling of the food as well as the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building needed improvement.

The takeaway’s management of food safety also needed major improvement.

This includes ensuring that systems or checks are in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.

Chknstop must make immediate changes to improve its hygiene standards and regain public trust.

24 Karat Chippy + Grill LTD

24 Karat Chippy + Grill received a hygiene rating of one after an inspection taking place on July 18.

While the hygienic handling of food and the cleanliness of the facilities were generally satisfactory, the food safety officer expressed a need for major improvement in terms of the venue’s food safety.

The restaurant serves a variety of grilled food including pizzas, kebabs, burgers, curries and house specials.

This rating serves as a reminder for the restaurant to ensure that food is prepared, cooked, stored, and served safely, while also emphasizing the importance of staff knowledge regarding food safety.

Zero rating

Chaye Khana

The hygiene and handling of the food was deemed generally satisfactory. Yet the report lists the venue’s management of food safety as needing urgent improvement.

The cleanliness and condition of the establishment were also in need of improvement.

The "urgent improvement necessary" rating is defined on the FSA website as: “Multiple major non-compliances or critical non-compliance identified during audit visit or interim audit period.

“Official intervention required to ensure public health safeguards.”

A spokesperson for Chaye Khana declined to comment when contacted.
