Blackrod Bypass was closed today following a crash involving a van and lorry.

The road was closed between Station Road and Chorley Road, leaving the 575 bus route diverted and motorists forced to take alternative routes.

A crash between a van and a lorry was the cause of the closure, which occurred before 3pm, with The Bolton News understanding that minor injuries were sustained by vehicle occupants.

The road partially reopened later, with the busy A6 taken down to one lane as Greater Manchester Police waited to clear vehicles and spilled oil from the carriageway.

Earlier this year, Bolton Council said the data did not support traffic calming interventions on the Blackrod Bypass after residents requested action.

The crash comes just days after two other crashes over in Horwich, which saw two children hit in separate incidents, needing hospital treatment.

Police are now set to visit Horwich primary schools to warn children of road danger following the crashes.

According to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s ‘Vision Zero Strategy’, the city region is committed to try to eliminate ‘all road fatalities and life changing injuries’ by 2040.

The strategy says a ‘safe system’ approach should be taken to create safer roads and reduce the impact of any mistakes made by any road user.
