A child has been taken to hospital after being hit by a van driver in Horwich.

The latest crash, on Lee Lane, comes just a day after another crash on Chorley New Road – just a five-minute walk away – where another child was hit.

Ambulance and police were called to the scene at around 3.50pm on Tuesday, with an air ambulance crew attending alongside emergency vehicles.

Lee Lane remained closed until after 7pm, with a child taken to hospital following the crash. The 516 bus route was diverted via Winter Hey Lane and Chorley New Road.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “At around 3.50pm  we were called to Lee Lane in Horwich, Bolton, to a road traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian.”

Local residents – who did not want to be named – seemed unsurprised by the crash.

One woman, who spoke with The Bolton News, said: “There’s no zebra crossing or pelican crossing – the children run a gauntlet every day they cross that road.”

A man added: “The kids come out from the bus, like what happened today, and there’s about 50 kids just on that small space.”

Although the cause of this crash is not known, it has prompted concerns about the road.

Another resident, who lived further down the road, said people are regularly speeding on Lee Lane.

He said: “This road’s 20mph, they come down here 30, 40, 50mph. This road’s an accident waiting to happen.”

The man added that he was ‘not really’ surprised that a child had been hit.

He continued: “They need to do something, because it’s speed – it’s bad here, speed.”

A man walking his dog past the cordon said he was surprised that two crashes had happened in just two days – but that he had seen people doing 60-70mph and that the road was unsafe for children to walk on.

He said ‘proper policing’ was needed to solve the problems, adding: “You can get away with speeding, there’s no speed cameras – there’s no way you can get caught other than by having an accident.”

He continued: “That bus stop across the way from the Crown where this has happened, it’s a very narrow pavement.

“Every time the kids come out, there’s piles of them. It’s just an accident waiting to happen, there’s just too many people crowding around a narrow pavement with the traffic the way it is.

“If I was the school, I wouldn’t let the kids go to that bus stop.”
