Are you trying to find the perfect destination for a holiday this autumn? Whether you want to enjoy scenic walks as the leaves turn orange and brown or you want to enjoy some winter sun, there are plenty of places to choose from.

To help you out, Manchester Airport has highlighted seven locations you could enjoy a holiday now that summer is over.

From Canada to Cape Verde, there really is something for everyone.

Manchester Airport flights for autumn 2024

Manchester Airport offers flights to more than 200 destinations across four continents and these are seven of the places you could enjoy a break away this autumn.

It's important to note that the prices mentioned here may change. You can find out more and book your flights via the Manchester Airport website.

Take in the autumn colours in New England and Canada

Virgin Atlantic and Aer Lingus can fly you directly to New York JFK from Manchester Airport or you can head to Toronto with Airtransat and Air Canada.

The UK and Europe have plenty of places for taking in the autumn colours but Manchester Airport says nothing there “quite matches the awesome spectacle of New England and southeastern Canada in the Fall.”

Vast swathes of the region are covered in broadleaf forests which explode into an array of reds, oranges and golds in late September and early October.

The New England region of the US spans six states (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine) and it makes for a fantastic autumnal road trip, starting and ending in New York, says Manchester Airport.

Visitors to the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario can expect the same splendid scenery and can combine it with trips to natural wonders like Lake Ontario and the Niagara Falls.

You can reach Toronto with Airtransat on a direct flight from Manchester for £436pp return this Autumn.

Enjoy some late summer sun in Cape Verde

TUI can fly you from Manchester Airport to Sal or Boa Vista this autumn with the airport saying “there are few better places to go than Cape Verde.”

The island nation, just to the south of Spain’s Canary Islands off the coast of North Africa, is at its best in late October and November.

At this time, the rainy season has finished, the island is at its greenest and temperatures hit a daily average of 28C.

Manchester Airport adds: “The islands’ beaches and cuisine are somewhat reminiscent of the Caribbean and direct flights from Manchester to two Cape Verde airports (Sal and Boa Vista) are available with TUI.”

This autumn, flights to Sal start from £276pp return.

Hike the ‘Path of Gods’ on the Amalfi Coast

Jet2.com, Ryanair and TUI can fly you to Naples from Manchester this autumn.

Manchester Airport said: “Italy’s Amalfi Coast is iconic and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. It’s bustling in the summer months, but Autumn is arguably the best time to enjoy it – as temperatures cool, you can take on its scenic coastal hiking trails and explore the winding streets of its ancient towns perched on mountain slopes, without breaking too much of a sweat.”

The Path of the Gods is a five-mile route along the clifftops between the villages of Bomerano and Nocelle.

You can also take in the sights in neighbouring Naples. You can enjoy a less hectic experience at archaeological wonder Pompeii and a shorter wait to be seated at one of the city’s world-famous pizzerias at this time of year.

Get cosy in a cabin in Norway

Norwegian can fly you to Bergen for a cosy cabin holiday in Norway.

Danish ‘hygge’ was trendy a few years ago, but the Norwegians have their own version – koselig, a feeling of cosiness, relaxation and living in the moment, while doing things at your own pace.

Enjoy snuggling up to the fire in a log cabin with spectacular views over icy lakes, snow-capped mountains and pine forests.

@shadayemcleod I’ve had such an amazing time here in Norway, and highly recommend adding Bergen to your bucketlist !!!                                  #travel #solotravel #norway #bergen ♬ Norwegian Wood (as made famous by The Beatles) - Abbey Road Players

You can take a hike through those same woods or relax in your private jacuzzi.

The airport says: “The stunning countryside around Bergen is the perfect spot for this kind of laid-back break”.

The city’s airport is under two hours from Manchester when flying with Norwegian and a return can cost as little as £78pp return in October.

A city break without the crowds

Fly to Istanbul with easyJet, Pegasus Airlines and Turkish Airlines.

Dubbed the ‘City where East meets West’, Istanbul has the distinction of being the only major city to straddle two continents. The Bosphorus Strait, which cuts Istanbul in two, is the dividing line between Europe and Asia.

Three major bridges, a tunnel, and countless ferry crossings connect the city and there’s plenty to explore from the renowned Hagia Sofia mosque, which has stood for almost 1,500 years, to the opulent Topkapi Palace.

You’ll also be able to enjoy incredible food, a distinct café culture and haggling opportunities aplenty at the colourful Grand Bazaar.

Temperatures can soar here in the summer but by October they average out at 20C.

Search for the Northern Lights in Iceland

You can fly to Reykjavik with easyJet, Icelandair, Jet2.com and TUI or fly to Akureyri with Jet2.com from November 12, 2024.

Manchester Airport explains: “The Autumn months hit a kind of sweet spot in Iceland as the crowds have gone, but the dramatic landscapes it is famous for are still easily accessible with daylight hours long enough and weather conditions still good enough to allow for glacier hikes and excursions.”

Can I still travel with a red passport in 2024?

If you’re lucky, you could even catch the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).

This year, for the first time, the northern Icelandic city of Akureyri also opens up to holidaymakers from our region with Jet2.com launching flights from mid-November so you can take in some of Iceland’s most untouched wilderness and enjoy spots like the Myvatn Nature Baths, a network of mineral-rich geothermal hot springs.

Enjoy the Rioja region’s Wine Harvest Festival

easyJet can fly you to Bilbao from Manchester Airport this autumn.

Manchester Airport says: “If southern Spain is famous for its beaches, the north of the country boasts the best of its culinary scene and there is no better way to explore this than to throw yourself into the Rioja Wine Harvest Festival.

“The annual event takes place over the course of a week in the town of Logroño, at the heart of the Rioja region – starting with the Feast of San Mateo on 21st September.

“A packed programme of events includes public parades, musical performances, winemaking demonstrations, street parties that run late into the evening, and, of course, the vino is always pouring.”

Logroño is two hours by bus from Bilbao and easyJet offers a direct service from Manchester to Bilbao airport with return flights in the week of the festival costing £137pp.
