A “knife surrender” event is set to be held on a park later this month just before a change in the law on “zombie knives".
Police say that the event will be held on St Mary’s Park in Walkden over two days on Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22.
This will give people a chance to surrender “zombie” knives and machetes before the law changes on Tuesday September 24 and they become illegal.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “One of the biggest things communities are concerned about across the Greater Manchester area and the UK is knife crime.
“So, the Little Hulton, Walkden and Worsley Neighbourhood Policing team are taking the initiative and holding a knife sweep and knife surrender event in St Marys Park, Walkden.
“This will be a two-day event held over Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22.
“This will give local people a opportunity to hand in any knives that they may have but don't want and would like them to be disposed of safely without the fear of prosecution.

“Please note that legislation changes on September 24 for knives.
“We are committed to make the streets of Little Hulton, Walkden and Worsley safe so this will be the first of many such events we will be holding in the local area.
“It will be also a great way for local residents to meet their neighbourhood policing team.”
