Plans have been submitted to build a shared house in Leigh.

On behalf of applicant Jonathan Unsworth, Space Architectural has submitted a planning application for a seven-bedroom house of multiple occupation (HMO) on Smallbrook Lane.

The proposals would build a semi-detached house in a space that currently lies empty between two neighbouring properties, and has become overgrown in recent years.

Another property formerly occupied some of this space before it was demolished more than 10 years ago.

At present, planning permission is only required to convert residential properties into HMOs if they will house seven or more people, or if it is a commercial property that is being converted rather than a residential home.

HMOs can make an important contribution to housing needs and help tenants find an affordable property, although they are often controversial due to concerns over noise and anti-social behaviour due to more people living in a confined area.

Information on Wigan Council's planning portal proposes that the newbuild terrace will be constructed of similar brick and tiles, if approved by the council's planning committee.

Recycled waste would be stored in separate bins to the rear, and collected via an access path to the side of the property. There would only be one space for vehicle parking.
