A firm just outside the town centre has built a new building which it is now battling to keep in place.
Travis Perkins, a nationwide British builders' merchant and home improvement, has built on its site on Bark Street in the centre of the town.
Bolton Council has launched enforcement action against the company for erecting the building.
It has written to the company stating that they appear to have, without permission, erected a building.
It also states the building must be demolished within 90 days.
But the company has launched an appeal against this enforcement notice which has been allowed.

One person nearby has also taken exception to the new building.
The man, who asked not to be named, stated: “I live on Chorley Street and I can see it from my window.
“It is like a big metal tin with a cloth roof.
“It is not small it is huge.”
A spokesperson for the company said the new building was smaller than the one it had replaced.
They said: “As a long standing and successful business in this area, we enjoy strong relationships with local tradespeople. We were therefore surprised and disappointed that our original planning application for a replacement building on this site was refused, given that this is smaller than the old building, which was unsightly and structurally unsound.
“The new building, which is located in an industrial area with similar businesses, is now located further away from residential properties and has been painted in a neutral colour to be sympathetic to the surrounding area.
“As a business that serves the local builders of Bolton, it is important that we continue to provide quality building materials to them, so we have lodged an appeal, which we hope will be successful, and we now await a response from the planning inspectorate.'
