A meeting has been held with local MPs, police, representatives from the council, and local councillors to discuss speeding and traffic issues on St Helens Road and Deane Road.

Greater Manchester Police said the meeting held this week was to explore ways to work together to improve road safety standards in the area.

The force also issued tickets and seized a vehicle on the road.

It comes just weeks after Bolton MP Phil Brickell, who also attended the meeting, said GMP would be undertaking covert surveillance on the roads to identify and take action against repeat speeders and antisocial drivers.

In June, grandmother Karen Kimblin was killed in a crash near the Asda on St Helens Road, with another crash just over a week later leaving a cyclist in hospital.

Later in July, another crash left a car overturned on St Helens Road – leading to further calls for action.

Later that month, Bolton Council was granted ‘safer roads funding’ by the government in order to invest in improvements on the road.

Phil Brickell MP said: “‘It was great to meet with the police regarding further action on St Helens Road.

“We are strengthening the partnership working between police, council and elected representatives to address concerns and ensure local residents are properly heard.

“The police, council and elected representatives are all on the same page regarding what needs to happen to stop the anti-social driving issues. It was great to see the Police out on St Helens Road issuing tickets and, in one case, seizing a vehicle yesterday.

“The message is clear and we speak as one voice, those driving irresponsibly will not be tolerated and run the real risk of being caught.

“Further updates from the council and police will come in due course.

“I am pleased that the Department for Transport has now provided Safer Roads funding for the St Helens Road area which will help us make the improvements we need to make.’

Yasmin Qureshi said: “Yesterday’s meeting with the Police and Council highway officers was an important opportunity to follow up on our previous emergency meeting after the tragic crash.

“For too long concerns on anti-social driving in the area have gone unresolved.

“I’m pleased that our constructive engagement is now leading to a clear plan with several steps being taken to tackle the issue.”
