A village was in full bloom as it staged its annual horticultural show.

Gardeners and crafters exhibited flowers, fruit, vegetables, cookery and artwork at Edgworth Horticultural Society’s annual show at The Barlow.

Winners received trophies from Coronation Street and Emmerdale actress Lauren Dickenson.

Jean Turner, chairperson of the society, said she was pleased with the turnout.

She said: “We had more people entering than last year.

"Though the weather hasn’t been so good, it was a successful show.

“It wouldn’t have made any money, but the aim was to showcase the efforts that people have made growing and making things during the year.

“We had a very good time.”

Jean won first prize for her lemon custard cake and lemon curd.

She got to share her triumph with her granddaughter, Charlotte Stevens, 16, who also won first prize for a loaf of bread she baked.

Many youngsters joined in the exhibition this year.

Jean said: “We were very lucky that a lot of committee members’ grandchildren took part and helped us out.

“It’s a great outlet, for village and the children I feel.

“My granddaughter enjoyed it tremendously and I hope my other grandchildren will go as well.”

They also helped out.

She said: “It was very necessary because most of the committee are in their 60s and older and the heavy lifting is very difficult.

“So the youngsters who helped out were absolutely invaluable.”

Horticulture also has benefits for them, Jean said.

She said: “It is so good for their mental health and helps them meet people as well.”

It also has use for adults and the world at large.

Jean said: “Even in a small space, if you’re able to grow some of your own food and attract wildlife to that area, it will help so much in improving the biodiversity of the planet.

“You can grow them on the wall or a balcony. And when kids go off to college, they can grow their own herbs if they wish to.”
