There are sink holes and then there is this!

The crater on Kestor Street, Bolton, 1995

This massive crater opened up in the car park of a Bolton works in 1995 and measured more than 20 feet across and 40 feet deep.

The hole on Kestor Street was in the car park of W & J Leigh’s paintworks and was cordoned off immediately. Experts were called in to investigate what had caused the large hole to suddenly appear - it was believed it may have been long-forgotten mine workings.

Test drilling would be carried out for several weeks around the site to check the stability of the surrounding area and sewage was being pumped around a pipe, fractured when the collapse occurred.
