A "hazardous" road will be shut for five days in Westhoughton as "parts of its surface have been coming off," a local councillor has said.

Platt Lane, on the Park Road/Wigan boundary, will be closed for resurfacing works from Monday, August 12, to Saturday 17 from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

Resurfacing will take about a week to complete, weather permitting. The road will only be closed on weekdays.

Property access will mostly be maintained, but it may be restricted while the roadworks are going on.

Residents are asked to keep Platt Lane clear of vehicles during the working day for resurfacing works to take place.

The contractor will warn residents when to clear their vehicles closer to when the road works start works.

Bolton Council has apologised to residents for any inconvenience.

Cllr David Chadwick, of Westhoughton South ward, said: “This has needed doing for some time. Parts of the road’s surface have been coming off.

“We’ve tried to avoid creating too much diversion by having it done during the school holidays.

“It’s necessary, and unfortunately there’s never a perfect time to do it, but we’re doing this with the least delays to the travelling public.

“I hope the people will appreciate the improvement in the surface of the road along Platt Lane.”

Cllr John McHugh, of Westhoughton Central ward, said: “The road surface is not ideal, it’s hazardous.

“Hopefully the effect will be minimal. Because of the nature of the repairs, the road does need to be shut.”

Councillors and residents have voiced concerns about other dangerous roads in need of resurfacing.

Two main roads in Bromley Cross, Darwen and Turton Road, were closed for more than a month for resurfacing in late July.

The ward's councillor Amy Cowen said the road surface was "shockingly bad" and "desperately needed" to be fixed.

Roads linking Bury and Bolton also needed resurfacing because of large holes.
