The MP had already been elected to a role as a local councillor in Manchester City Council’s Baguley ward.

While still listed as a councillor on the authority’s website, Manchester City Council confirmed that Mr Brickell had already resigned his position.

A by-election for his replacement will take place on Thursday, September 5.

Nominations to stand in the ward opened on Thursday, August 1.

A full list of candidates standing is expected to be published by Manchester City Council at 4pm on Friday, August 9.

Mr Brickell said: “As I promised during the General Election campaign, my sole focus will be on representing people across the Bolton West constituency.

“Serving as an MP for the town where I was born and raised is an immense privilege and I am looking forward to working every day to make Bolton West a better place to live.”
