Concerns have been raised after another crash on a residential street.

Mum-of-four Melissa Wakes has lived on Chip Hill Road for 13 years.

The residential street is also used as a ‘cut-through road’ for motorists travelling between Wigan Road and Hulton Lane.

The latest crash has prompted calls for the road to be safer.

On Monday, July 29, a car occupant was taken to hospital after a two-vehicle crash on Chip Hill Road. The cause of the crash is unclear.

Although the cause of the latest crash is not known, Melissa said that it is a road where  drivers ‘speed up and down’.

The 33-year-old will not let her three youngest children, aged 13, 11, and six, cross the road independently, as she believes the street to be too dangerous.

Speaking to The Bolton News, Melissa said: “It’s absolutely got worse, there’s been more near-misses and crashes than ever – especially if the weather’s hot as well, they have their music on full and they don’t care.”

She added: “When we’re pulling out to get out to take the children to school and I have to go to work, they just speed up – they’re speeding so fast they can’t always slow down in time.

“They don’t hit you, but… and that can be at 8.30 in the morning. It’s ridiculous.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just after 9.15am on Monday, 29 July, two fire engines from Atherton and Bolton North fire stations, and the Enhanced Fire Rescue Unit from Leigh fire station attended a crash involving two vehicles at the junction of Hulton Lane and Chip Hill Road, Bolton.

“Firefighters helped to remove one lady from a vehicle before being taken to hospital by North West Ambulance Service.

“Crews were in attendance for just over 20 minutes.”

Yesterday, Bolton Council said: “Road safety is a key priority for the council.

“We work closely with GMP to address this issue and we are also working in collaboration with partners across GM to develop a ‘Vision Zero’ strategy. This aims to eliminate all deaths and life-changing injuries on the region’s roads by 2040.

“We don’t know the specific facts of this collision at this stage.

“If speeding is found to the cause, that is a driver behaviour issue and a matter for the police.”
