A Bolton school has been recognised for its "welcoming, warm atmosphere" helping all pupils to succeed.

University Collegiate School (UCS) on Deane Road has achieved the Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM).

UCS was recognised for its "transformation" over the last two years and its clear values, "Professional; Responsible; Loyal".

Assessor, Alyson Tolley, visited the school in June over two days.

She said: "The school has a welcoming, warm atmosphere and this is apparent from the minute you enter the building. Sitting in reception, I was acknowledged by all staff and students as they arrived and I could hear conversations that exuded respect and kindness.

"I had the privilege to talk to students who spoke openly and confidently about their experiences and what their hopes were for their futures, demonstrating the school’s commitment to aspiration.

"They were welcoming and able to articulate their school journey, with older students describing how the school has changed for the better over the past two years.

"The staff talk passionately about their work at the UCS and how they feel supported and listened to by leaders."

The report adds: "Heads of department talked about how leaders get the right balance between support and challenge, with one colleague speaking about the support he received whilst completing his National Professional Qualification (NPQ).

"Relationships are exceptional and walking through the school I could see the positive ways in which staff and students interact with each other. There is mutual respect alongside genuine warmth in and out of classrooms."

Concluding, Ms Tolley said: "I am of the firm opinion that the UCS fully meets the standards required by the Inclusion Quality Mark’s Inclusive School Award."

The IQM Inclusive School Award lasts for three years before a school needs to undergo reassessment. Its principles promote access and diversity and aims to create an environment where all can succeed.

The school is run by Quest Trust.

CEO Marc Doyle said: "The findings fit within our trust mission around supporting young people from early years through to employment.

"We talk regularly to students about the world of work and the potential opportunities that await them.

"The school is led with kindness, support and challenge. We are delighted with the progress made over the last academic year.

"Staff and students are working together and UCS Bolton is a place where students learning and progress is promoted."

Headteacher, James Inman said: "We work closely with many employers and they visit our school regularly to discuss potential career paths with students.

"We consider potential qualifications and careers with students during lessons too and I am delighted this has helped raise students’ aspirations.

"We believe our students can be whatever they want to be and it’s wonderful to know they feel the same way too."
