A cycleway in Bolton town centre has been improved with a new surface.
The cycle path outside Bolton station was considered too bumpy – with a new surface installed on Sunday, July 28.

In January 2023, campaigner Dr Grahame Cooper said he had complained about the cycleway – which used hand-laid tarmac, as opposed to machine-laid tarmac on the main carriageway.
At the time, he said: “It is quite possible to get machines that go the same width as cycleways, but they’re never given priority.”

Now, Dr Cooper said he would be riding the new section of cycleway himself before making any judgement.
The cycleway was installed as part of a £7 million scheme to install protected cycle tracks and a cycle optimised crossing near the station.
The protected path outside the station was completed between 2021 and 2022, linking to the protected crossing.
A Bolton Council spokesperson said: “The cycleway outside Bolton train station was partially resurfaced yesterday (Sunday 28 July).
“This was due to an area of the cycle track having become defective.”
