A car flipped over following a crash in Bolton earlier today.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed it was called to the crash at 9.06am this morning on Chip Hill Road – a residential street which links the A676, Wigan Road, with the A6145, Hulton Lane.

No serious injuries were recorded, the force confirmed.

The crash comes exactly one month after firefighters attended a three-car crash on Chip Hill Road in the afternoon of June 29.

Local resident Melissa Wakes contacted Bolton Council about danger on the road in 2020. Following the crash last month, she again contacted them – asking if they were “waiting for a death to intervene”.

In an email seen by The Bolton News, Bolton Council’s highways department responded, saying that “accident and fatality records are taken into consideration when prioritising traffic calming schemes.”

The body added that the authority “does not currently have a mainstream budget” for traffic calming interventions on the road, and adding that it “relies on funding from local developments.”

According to Department for Transport road safety data, known as ‘STATS19’, there have been seven crashes on Chip Hill Road and in its immediate vicinity from 2012 to 2022, involving car occupants, pedestrians, and a cyclist as casualties.

Less than a mile away, on St Helens Road, a car was flipped over in a crash following a police chase on Tuesday last week, exactly one month after a beloved Bolton grandmother was killed on the same road.

Bolton Council working to 'eliminate all deaths and life-changing injuries

A spokesperson for Bolton Council said: “Road safety is a key priority for the council. We work closely with GMP to address this issue and we are also working in collaboration with partners across GM to develop a ‘Vision Zero’ strategy.

“This aims to eliminate all deaths and life-changing injuries on the region’s roads by 2040.

“We don’t know the specific facts of this collision at this stage.

“If speeding is found to the cause, that is a driver behaviour issue and a matter for the police.”

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue, and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority have been contacted for comment.
