Temperatures in Bolton are set to soar to the high 20s this week – reaching a tropical 27°C high on Wednesday, July 31, according to the Met Office.

It comes as forecasters at the weather agency have said there is potential the weather could become an official heatwave.

The Met Office defines a UK heatwave as being “when a location records a period of at least three consecutive days with daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave temperature threshold.”

In Bolton, that threshold is 25°C – while London, for example, sees the threshold higher, at 28°C.

The forecasted high in Bolton on Tuesday is 24°C, 1°C lower than the threshold, meaning the official definition hasn’t been reached. Today (Monday), temperatures are expected to peak at 26°C.

In Manchester, however, temperatures are forecast to reach the threshold – meaning a heatwave could be declared if they bear out.

Yesterday, Simon Partridge, forecaster at Met Office, said: “There is certainly potential that it could become an actual official heatwave, because in the spells you’ve had before it hasn’t actually met all the criteria.

“If there’s not, it’s very close to it, and if you’re out and about and a member of the public then it’s going to feel like a heatwave anyway, because also overnight things are going to turn a little bit more humid and muggy day-on-day as well.”

Over in Paris, temperatures are expected to sore to 36°C on Tuesday – though thankfully they’ll fall to a slightly lower 33°C on Wednesday, when Bolton’s Cindy Ngamba is expected to box for the Refugee Olympic Team.

Bolton’s peak temperatures are set to reach just 1°C below that of Faro, in Portugal’s Algarve region – which will have highs of 27°C today, 25°C on Tuesday, and 28°C on Wednesday.

UV levels in Bolton are expected to remain high through to Friday, meaning extra care should be taken when outside.

The Met Office advises to seek shade during midday hours, to cover up and wear sunscreen.
