Those with an interest in the supernatural could contact the ghost of a murderer or feel the rage of an angry judge’s spirit at a forthcoming paranormal event in Bolton.

Bolton’s Old County Police Station on Castle Street is the venue for a night of other-worldly investigation by Haunted Adventures.

“This location isn’t investigated that often so it’s an interesting place to investigate,” said Jamie Leicester, co-owner of Haunted Adventures.

A previous visit to the building revealed that the court room and cells were the most paranormally active areas.

“We detected multiple voices muttering and that was strange because it’s usually just a single voice,” said Jamie.

“We also picked up another voice and, through researching the history, established that it belonged to a court official or police officer.”

The Old County Police Station has been an imposing symbol of law and order in Bolton.

Built in 1875, the Victorian Grade II listed building has witnessed a multitude of events, from the grim procession of hardened criminals to the solemn deliberations in its courtroom

The wooden courtroom dock and public gallery stand as they did over a century ago, offering a glimpse into the past where justice was meted out. Beneath the courtroom, six cells remain, each with its original wooden bed—a stark plank of wood screwed to the wall.

Adjacent to the courtroom lies the judge's changing room, a space that once saw the preparation of many a solemn figure about to preside over matters of life and liberty.

“This building has stored up so much energy of the years, from the many prisoners and notorious local criminals that have been incarcerated within its walls, to all the staff that worked there. The walls are busting with tales,” said Jamie.

Sharon Burke, who will be one of the leaders on the September 7 event, recalled how on a past visit, one member of the public spun round in shock when she felt a hand on her shoulder.

“We also got someone standing in the actual dock and they felt a hand on their shoulder and experienced a feeling of being crowded.”

To up the fear factor, the investigations are conducted in darkness.

“It’s a way of heightening the other senses,” explained Sharon

Bolton named as the second most haunted place in the UK

The night of eerie exploration begins at 8.30pm and runs until 1.30am and will be packed with activities designed to connect with the spectral inhabitants of the old station.

Attendees can engage in séances, use ghost-hunting equipment such as K-II meters, trigger objects, ghost meters, and EDIs, and even conduct lone vigils in the cells for those who are particularly brave.

Participants will work in smaller, more personal groups to ensure an intimate and immersive experience.

The expert team of investigators will offer help and advice throughout the night, ensuring a safe and enlightening experience.

The Castle Street Police Station has been a silent witness to countless dramatic events, from the grim to the mundane until it ceased operations in 2006.

Following its closure, the building found a new lease on life as a popular location for television programmes and films, capturing the imagination of producers and audiences alike with its preserved historical features and atmospheric interiors.

“The event is more than just a thrill-seeking adventure, it’s an opportunity to connect with Bolton's rich history in a deeply personal way,” said Jamie.

“Participants will not only walk the same halls as Victorian-era police officers and criminals but will also have the chance to uncover the mysteries that still linger in the shadows.”

Whether you're a seasoned paranormal investigator or a curious newcomer, the visit could see your greatest hopes – or worst fears – come true.
