Yoga teacher Kadie Cooper put her new Horwich business on hold when her beloved Aunt Edna became ill with terminal bowel cancer.
As her aunt was admitted to Bolton Hospice for palliative care, Kadie became a frequent visitor. “She had always been so supportive to me,” she explained, “and I loved her so much.”
Throughout the six weeks that Edna Patterson was in the Hospice, Kadie had the opportunity to witness the “impeccable” care that staff and volunteers gave her.
“Everyone was amazing – nothing was too much trouble,” she added. “She had a birthday with a lovely party and a hairdresser came to cut her hair on her birthday when she’d only been there a few days. She wanted for nothing and we were all so appreciative.”
Kadie, aged 37, has had her own challenges to face over the past years. She struggled with her mental health and was only diagnosed with ADHD and Unstable Personality Disorder last year. Before that, she had years of frustration.
She wanted her studio to be a safe place for people to rest and recover and to grow a community where people could be supported through their times of need.
She first got involved with yoga through a friend who was a yoga teacher and wanted her to demonstrate some poses. “I didn’t even like yoga at first!” she laughed.
Gradually, though, she realized that it brought calm and peace to her life.
She took an online course during lockdown and then last year completed her 18 months, 200 hour teacher training course before beginning teaching.
Earlier this year, she spotted the former nail studio premises on Lee Lane and has transformed them into a light and airy yoga studio.
Sadly, she had been open only a matter of weeks when her aunt’s health began to fail. As a result, Kadie spent as much time as she could at the Hospice – impressed every day by the commitment and care of staff and volunteers.
Kadie and Edna made plans for a fundraising event to help the Hospice before she passed away last month. Now, on Saturday, July 27 at the Feel Good Flow by KJ Studio, Kadie will run a 12-hour Yoga Challenge hoping to raise £1,000 for the Hospice.
She has a full programme starting at 7am with Rise and Shine Hatha Yoga, then on to Guided Meditation, Chair Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, Kids’ yoga, Hot yoga, more Vinyasa Flow then finishing with Safe Space Trauma Techniques, Breathwork and Meditation at 7pm.
Anyone can join in the sessions with all funds going to the Hospice.
