A man breached a suspended sentence and a restraining order when he viciously attacked two women in a flat.

Arran Greer, 37, had avoided a jail sentence when he was handed a suspended sentence at Bolton Crown Court last September for attacking his ex-partner and her friend.

But in March this year police were called to a Bolton at Home property where the same two women had been after a “panic button” was pressed.

Prosecutor Aubrey Sampson said: “It was reported that there was a male inside the flat assaulting the two friends.”

Mr Sampson told the court that the police arrived just after Greer, the man who had been assaulting the two women, left.

He said that Greer, who was already forbidden from contacting the women by a ten-year restraining order, had been drinking with them.

This was before “for no apparent reason” he started assaulting his ex-partner before turning to the other woman and then leaving.

Mr Sampson said that Greer’s ex-partner’s friend believed that he “could very easily have killed her.”

As well as breaching his restraining order Greer, of Rishton Lane, Great Lever, had been serving a one year and nine-month sentence, suspended for two years, at the time.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault and to breaching a restraining order on June 12 this year.

Amanda Johnson, defending, said that the assaults were part of a “relatively short-lived incident” but that Greer “accepts he shouldn’t have been there.”

She said that he had had long standard issues with alcohol and before that with drugs.

Ms Johnson said: “He is someone who had laboured under various addictions throughout his adult life.”

She pointed out that Greer, who appeared before the court via video-link from prison, had already served several months in jail.

But the Honorary Recorder for Bolton Judge Martin Walsh said that his actions amounted to a “gratuitous assault” on the two women.

Addressing Greer, he added: “And the victim was attacked by you while you were subject to the restraining order which was made for 10 years.”

Judge Walsh jailed Greer for 33 months.
