Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have stopped a driver in Bolton after reportedly finding out they had no licence and two illegal tyres.

GMP’s Motor Cycle Unit stopped the foreign-registered vehicle on Turton Road and discovered the driver had been in the UK for three years.

According to the government, vehicles driven on foreign number plates can only be used in the UK for up to six months in total, and only if the owner is just visiting and does not plan to live in the UK – with specific conditions for those wanting to use the vehicle for longer than six months.

The van was seized under section 165A of the Road Traffic Act, which provides police with the power to seize vehicles driven without a licence or insurance.

Those looking to reclaim their vehicle after it has been seized have 14 days to prove satisfactory ownership and to provide legitimate insurance at a police station, or their vehicle will be disposed of, according to GMP – with no extensions given.

Vehicles can be scrapped or sold at auction after this time.

When vehicles are sold at auction, drivers may be entitled to claim the proceeds of the sale if they can prove legitimate and satisfactory ownership within 12 months.
