Residents have spoken of their fears following a brutal assault near to where they live.
The police investigation into the attack on a man in his 40s, in Farnworth continues, with detectives appealing for information.
Officers were called to Buckley Lane at around midnight on Thursday and a cordon was set up.
The cordon remained there this morning, with police on Prospect Avenue.
A man in his thirties has been arrested.
Today police remained on the scene with the Crime Scene Investigation unit carrying out investigations.
Doris Anderson has lived on the street for almost two years.
She said: "I have never seen anything like it.
"I didn't see it at the time but I've had all these messages from people asking if I'm alright.
"My granddaughter came home around 11.40pm (on Wednesday) and didn't see anything.
"Her friend came in around 15 minutes later and said there was all the police cars outside."

Tony Bagnall has lived nearby for two years.
He said: "I am a bit worried, it is normally not too bad here.
"I actually came out about that time but didn't see anything."
One woman said: "I know as much as anybody, there has been an altercation that got nasty."
One local resident said: "I just hope this person pulls through and they find the culprits."
And they added: "Police need to impose more powers, we have youths running around breaking into empty properties and assaulting people. It's only going to get worse because they are getting away with stuff like this."
Detective Sergeant Neil Moss, from GMP's Bolton district, said: "We are appealing for anyone who may have seen this awful incident to get in touch with us as we continue with our initial enquiries.
"A man remains in hospital in a serious condition and while we have made an arrest, our work is still very much ongoing. I would ask anyone in the local area with relevant CCTV, doorbell, dashcam, or mobile phone footage to please get in touch with us - your assistance could prove invaluable."
