Detective Sergeant Neil Moss, from GMP's Bolton district, said: "We are appealing for anyone who may have seen this awful incident to get in touch with us as we continue with our initial enquiries.
"A man remains in hospital in a serious condition and while we have made an arrest, our work is still very much ongoing. I would ask anyone in the local area with relevant CCTV, doorbell, dashcam, or mobile phone footage to please get in touch with us - your assistance could prove invaluable."
