After overcoming serious medical problems, a Bolton College staff member has his sight fixed on a world record.

And Michael Taylor is hoping that his attempt to set a new record will help people realise that health issues need not define – nor limit – their lives.

The college’s digital content lead aims to do a 300kg deadlift at the North West Strongest Warrior event in September.

For anyone to manage that would be an achievement, but for Michael, who had his large intestine removed and who now uses a stoma, it will be a truly amazing feat.

“From the age of 13 I had Crohn’s disease, so I was in and out of hospital a lot” explained 29-year-old Michael, of Tonge Moor Road.

“In 2022 I needed an operation. It was supposed to be straightforward keyhole surgery, but when they investigated, they realized they needed to remove my entire large colon and performed nine hours of emergency surgery.”

Displaying admirable determination and a positive spirit, Michael decided to join Warrior Gym in Bolton as part of his recovery process.

The Tennyson Street gym helped him build his confidence and embrace his new way of life, so much so that he has decided to try for a new world record.

“I’ve done my research and can’t find anyone who has managed to deadlift 300kg with a stoma, and there’s no category in Britain’s Disabled Strongman competition, so it looks like I’ll be the first, if I achieve it.

“I’ve upped my training regime and the other week I lifted 270kg without any problems, so I’m feeling confident.”

Cheering him on will be his partner, Hannah, and seven-year-old daughter, Astrid.

“I hope what I’m doing will help others. I want to send out the message that just because you have health issues, it doesn’t mean you can’t compete with the best of them.”
