The annual summer vacation season has descended, with Dr Manisha Kumar, Chief Medical Officer for NHS Greater Manchester, providing her top advice for a stress-free holiday.

Dr Kumar stresses the importance of having lots prescription medication with you, ensuring to order needed supplies at least seven days prior to your departure.

Dr Kumar said: "If you're taking medicine out of the UK then it's important that you also check with your doctor or pharmacist whether your medication contains a controlled drug."

To transport prescription medication abroad, check the rules of the destination country.

Additionally, a holiday first aid kit is essential.

This will prevent unplanned trips to A&E and leave more time for vacation enjoyment.

As for the sun, avoid spending too long in the heat, re-apply sun cream throughout the day, stay in shade extensively between 11am and 3pm, wear a hat and drink lots of water.

When it comes to alcohol, taking care not to overdo it can prevent making unsafe decisions or risking a spike.

Dr Kumar added: "Keep a close eye on yours and your friends’ and families’ drinks – not leaving them unattended at any point."

Being aware of how to stay safe near the water, especially when children are around, can improve enjoyment and lessen the risk.

Among her other tips, Dr Kumar revealed the importance of travel insurance to avoid unexpected expenses.

Likewise, applying for a free UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) can provide necessary state healthcare in Europe and some other countries.

Lastly, if you're vacationing in the UK and face a non-emergency health issue, contact your local pharmacy or call 111 for advice.
