Amir Khan's wedding venue is allowed to open after midnight after the approval of its late-night licence this week.

The Bolton-born boxer's business partners, Excellency Plaza, applied for a licence for The Balmayna on May 20.

The wedding venue off Deane Road had its first wedding on May 18 but the application was to be allowed to open until half past midnight and to provide music and other performances until midnight.

Mohammad Jaberansari, the director of Excellency Plaza, appeared before a Licensing Sub-Committee of councillors David Chadwick, David Grant and Maureen Flitcroft at the town hall this week.

Mr Jaberansari said: "A wedding without a licence is not possible. After years and years we want the wedding venue to be brought back to life and to be the best wedding venue in Bolton and in the North West."

The director of Excellency Plaza said there will be no alcohol inside the venue for "religious reasons".

He said there will be no fireworks outside the venue of any sort, at any time, within a one-mile radius.

Mr Jaberansari said: "There is a £2,000 deposit and a disclaimer to say if there are any fireworks within a one mile radius we take away the £2,000 deposit."

There was opposition from some of the residents in the surroundings in particular as a result of the risk of noise nuisance. One resident appeared before the Licensing-Sub Committee to be told her concerns were not licensing issues, but planning issues.

After consideration Cllr Chadwick, Cllr Grant and Cllr Flitcroft approved the application with conditions.

The resident said: "There are hundreds of cars, all of which is noise surrounding us.

"If this is going on how long is it going to take to get hundreds of cars off the car park?"

The wedding venue off Deane Road is the result of around 10 years and around £16 million of work after the approval of planning permission more than a decade ago. "King" Khan, who attended Bolton College before going on to win a medal at the 2004 Olympics and 34 of 40 bouts in his boxing career, said "it is one of the best wedding venues in the country".

Mr Jaberansari said there is interest from Channel 4, Sky, and others in a show about The Balmayna.
