Shoppers visiting Bolton town centre in November 1977 could only stop and stare at the latest addition to Victoria Square.

For overnight, ‘Lofty’, a statue of a 10-foot tall cowboy had appeared leaving many folk bemused.

Why had a touch of the Wild West arrived in the town?

It was all part of an advertising campaign to promote the sale of jeans available from the Stolen From Ivor store on Market Street.

Perhaps you remember seeing Lofty back in the day or shopped at Stolen From Ivor which at its height had 40 shops across the North West. The last discount fashion store closed in 2023.

Wonder what happened to Lofty? What becomes of a 10-foot cowboy when he’s no longer required?
