A care assistant at Bolton’s Egerton Manor Care Centre trekked 50 miles raising more than £350 for Dementia UK.

Alan joined the Egerton Manor team after years of working in entertainment and has been serving as dementia champion for the past six months.

Alan completed 132,000 steps within 30 days in June to raise funds for the charity, which provides assistance and guidance to individuals suffering from dementia and their families.

He suggested the walking challenge after spotting a Facebook post and subsequently embarked on the journey in his free time and weekends, keeping his followers updated with regular 'selfies'.

Mr Hall said: "I decided to take on the challenge after working closely with families and friends of residents in the dementia community at Egerton Manor, seeing first hand how a dementia diagnosis can affect family and friends who are sometimes lost for information and feel unable to help.

"Although the challenge has been tough at times, getting up at 5am to get some miles under my belt before work, I am motivated in knowing that every single penny that I raise will go towards providing support, advice and care for those living with dementia."

Commissioning director at New Care, Dawn Collett said: "We’re very proud of Alan for identifying and undertaking this challenge, I know it has been hard at times but he’s completed all 50 miles and more, plus raised important cash for a valued charity.

"Not only has he raised funds, but he has also helped raise awareness of an often misunderstood disease, its early signs and triggers and the importance of a correct diagnosis."

The staff, residents and their families fully supported Alan throughout his endeavour, which is now complete.

To recuperate, Alan is planning to indulge in a relaxing two-hour full body and tissue massage and plenty of sleep.
