Edgworth hosted its tenth Village Fun Day recently, a free entry event which featured fairground attractions, market stalls and children’s races.
The event ran all afternoon and was attended by up to 500 people.
The event was organised and hosted by The Barlow, a community-run centre in Edgworth village which regularly plays host to social events like this one.
Philip Grundy, a trustee of The Barlow and organiser for the fun day said: “We’re able to put all the profits from the fun day into the running of The Barlow, maintaining it as a community-owned space.
“The event takes us about three months to organise and was a great success. The children’s races meant that people from all ages, parents and grandparents, came outside to join in the fun despite the rainy weather.”
The day also featured stalls, including a tombola, a lucky dip, as well as local personalities and businesses, such as a local gym instructor who led an outdoor group session and the local mountain rescue service.
Dance performances were given by students at the Aontacht Academy of Irish Dancing, based in Bury, and dancers from Harc Studios, based locally in Turton.
Children’s races were organised by Susan Hodgkiss, who is the manager of Scallywags pre-school and nursery.
She has organised the “mini mighty races” since the village fun day first began ten years ago.
“We had 30 of our own ‘scallywags’ at the event, and 120 children attended from the Turton & Edgworth Primary School.
"Our pre-school pupils took part in a 5km relay, and the primary school students took part in 1km and 2km races.
“We’re so happy to have continued organising the races for the tenth year and are already looking forward to next time.”
