A Blackburn engineer is leading local celebrations following a successful career at Amazon.

Kayleigh Beckley, a maintenance planner at the Amazon fulfilment centre in Bolton, shared her inspiring career journey on International Women in Engineering Day (June 23).

She aims to encourage other women to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

This year's Women in Engineering day theme, Enhanced by Engineering, celebrated women who have improved people's daily lives through their work.

Before joining Amazon six years ago, Kayleigh was a Navy engineer.

Her career in engineering was heavily influenced by her family, notably her uncle and grandfather, who were both military engineers.

Relating her journey into engineering, Kayleigh said: "My dad and grandad both had a huge influence on me growing up.

"From as early as I can remember they were taking me to motorsport events, talking to me about trucks and showing me how cars worked.

"Naturally, I became interested."

Kayleigh also shared her experiences of working for Amazon and her pursuit of encouraging more women into engineering.

She added: "When I started working in engineering 18 years ago, it was a very different sort of world.

"Now, there’s lots of help and encouragement for women in the industry.

"I want to show women that engineering doesn’t have to be greasy and oily."

Kayleigh additionally takes a lead role in several Amazon employee resource groups.

John Strydom, general manager at Amazon in Bolton, said: "We’re happy that Kayleigh has shared her story to help more women see what they can accomplish in STEM careers."

Outside of her Amazon duties, Kayleigh also serves as a mental health first aider for Mental Health Motorbike.
