In October 1972, the Bolton Evening News was reporting that motorists had been left “baffled” by new sets of triangular traffic lights which had appeared on Moor Lane.

Describing them as ‘novel signals’, the article said that they would control traffic during turnouts from Bolton’s new fire station and that Bolton was one of the first towns in the country to have the new lights.

Borough engineer Geoffrey Read said that they were similar to signals used at unmanned level crossings.

When the brigade was turning out to an emergency he said an amber light would show for give seconds then flashing red lights would take over.

New signs saying ‘Fire Station - stop when lights show’ - were being put up in Moor Lane and New Street.
