This photo shows that you never really know what surprises there are around Bolton.
Taken in 1955 it shows what is described as ‘the former ice making plant’ under the market hall. It was no longer being used for ice making and was being converted into an underground garage for use by the North West Electricity Board.
You can just see on the left one of the last remaining piles of ice which was being cleared away.
