A nationwide company's local community fund is inviting local charities and groups to apply for a share of £5m in funding.

Since its launch in 2016, Co-op's fund has supported almost 40,000 community projects across the UK, injecting over £100m into local initiatives.

Co-op is targeting projects working towards sustainable futures for both people and the planet.

This can include supporting young people to realise their potential, helping elderly residents feel connected in society, and improving mental well-being.

Tackling climate change and reducing waste while preserving nature are also on the list.

The company is also hoping to support projects that champion and celebrate diversity and inclusion.

Rebecca Birkbeck, director of community and member participation at Co-op said: "As a co-operative, our focus is to deliver increased value for our member-owners and their communities and we know that members really care about supporting local, grassroots projects.

"Through our Local Community Fund, we’re able to support local projects and initiatives that make a real difference to people and our planet in communities across the country."

Successful applicants will receive a minimum of £1,000, with 95 per cent of past recipients reporting enhanced community connections through participation in the scheme.

Community groups and charities interested in the funding have until Sunday, July 7 to apply.
