Amazon employees are branching out to improve Bolton's environment.

Workers at the sortation centre in Haydock took part in a tree planting event in Bolton as part of the company's commitment to the environment.

A team of 20 volunteers planted over 700 trees as part of a new partnership with City of Trees.

The Manchester-based charity is on a mission to create green spaces, boost health and wellbeing, enhance green skills, tackle the climate crisis and increase biodiversity in Greater Manchester.

The team at Amazon in Haydock plans to support City of Trees throughout 2024 and hopes to plant a tree for each of the 600 employees at the sortation centre.

Ben Metcalfe, one of the employees who was involved in the event, said: “It was a pleasure to be involved in the tree planting event with City of Trees and support Amazon’s commitment to the environment. We planted 740 trees in this first session, and it will be great to continue this new partnership.”

Alex Bedford, Fundraising Manager from City of Trees added: “Having green, tree-filled local environments can make a huge contribution to quality of life, promote good mental and physical health, and create liveable spaces. We’re pleased to be partnering with Amazon to tackle the climate crisis and boost the health and wellbeing of our local community.”

Amazon supports the communities where it operates and has delivered free computer science and STEM education programmes to more than 700,000 students across the UK through Amazon Future Engineer.

Amazon helps community organisations transport meals and other essentials to families in need through its pro bono logistics programme, Amazon Local Good, including more than seven million healthy breakfasts to children at risk of hunger in partnership with Magic Breakfast. And through its Multibank initiative, co-founded with former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Amazon has supported more than 200,000 families experiencing poverty, with the donation of more than 2 million surplus essential goods.

Amazon partners with Comic Relief to help people tackle poverty and is the official home of the charity’s iconic Red Nose.

Together with its employees, customers, and partners, Amazon has raised over £4.8 million to fund projects that support people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis and tackle issues such as homelessness, mental health problems, and food insecurity across the UK, and around the world.
